A small business SEO audit should explain what is stopping your website from serving the right visitors and what to do next. A long list of warnings is not enough. Each finding needs evidence, a clear action and a reason for its priority.
Define the searches and services that matter
Begin with the services the business wants to sell and the locations it genuinely serves. Distinguish people looking for advice from people ready to hire a supplier. A useful audit connects those different needs to suitable pages.
Search Console data can show queries, impressions and clicks for the site. When access is unavailable, an audit should say so. A public search comparison can reveal content gaps, but it cannot prove your traffic or exact local ranking.
Check whether important pages can be found
Review response codes, robots directives, canonical URLs and XML sitemaps together. A page can load normally in a browser while telling search engines not to index it. Conversely, private or duplicate pages may correctly be excluded.
Check internal links as well. Important services should be reachable through useful navigation and relevant content. Google's SEO Starter Guide describes the foundations of helping search engines and people understand a site.
Review content and metadata in context
Titles, headings and descriptions should explain the page clearly. A service page needs enough information for a buyer to understand the offer, its scope and the next step. Repeating the same phrase does not replace that information.
Check for overlapping pages, missing services and vague headings. Image alt text should describe the image's useful meaning. It should not claim that a generic office photograph shows a customer result or force unrelated keywords into the description.
Include local evidence and conversion paths
For local services, review the accuracy of business details and any eligible Business Profile. Genuine photographs, reviews and project examples can help people assess the offer. An audit should distinguish missing website evidence from information it has not been able to verify elsewhere.
Next, follow the enquiry journey on a phone. Can a visitor understand the service and reach the right contact route? Testing form delivery or a paid order requires an agreed approach; a read-only review should not claim those transactions were tested.
Turn a small business SEO audit into a work plan
- Record the affected URL and the evidence for each issue.
- Separate confirmed faults from suggested opportunities.
- Explain who needs to supply content, access or approvals.
- Agree how fixes will be checked after implementation.
- Choose a sensible period for reviewing search and enquiry data.
Speed scores need context too. A simulated test is useful for diagnosis, while real-user data reflects different devices and connections. Neither is a complete measure of SEO quality.
Choose the right scope
A focused audit may investigate a recent loss of visibility. A wider review can cover service structure, technical issues and content opportunities. Ask which pages and data sources are included before comparing proposals.
